Thermally modified wood is solid timber slow-cooked at between 180 and 230 degrees Celsius inside a sealed, oxygen-free chamber. Nothing is added. The heat breaks down the sugars that ordinarily absorb water and feed mould, whilst simultaneously reorganising the internal fibre structure. The result is a more dimensionally stable piece, deeper in colour, and — crucially — far less thirsty. According to Finnish research centre VTT, the process reduces moisture absorption by 40 to 50 per cent compared with the same untreated species. That is why it holds where conventional timber surrenders.

It is worth being precise: this is not waterproof timber, nor is it indestructible. It is wood that has learned to coexist with steam without warping or rotting. The difference between tolerating moisture and fearing it. In a bathroom, that distinction is everything.

The standard emerged in the 1990s across the Nordic countries — commercialised as Thermowood — and was used primarily in saunas and external cladding. Its arrival in domestic design bathrooms is relatively recent, and to our minds one of the finest developments in materials of the past decade.

Here is an opinion we hold without apology: thermally modified wood is more beautiful than the species it began as. The heat darkens it from within, not with a surface tint that scratches away, but with a deep amber tone that runs through the entire board. A pale ash emerges from the chamber looking much like walnut. A common pine acquires the quiet authority of a tropical hardwood, without a single tropical tree having been felled.

And then there is the touch. The surface becomes silky and matte, with the grain subtly raised. It is that tactile quality — not the visual one — that transforms a bathroom. Thermally modified oak and ash are our preferred species for surfaces in proximity to water. Beech, on the other hand, is undeniably beautiful but loses more mechanical strength through the heating process: we reserve it for details, never for a shelf that will bear weight above a shower.

Thermally modified wood accepts almost any zone in the bathroom, but it asks for considered placement. In the dry zone — vanity unit, wall cladding, ceiling — it performs without reservation. In areas of direct moisture — inside the shower tray or as flooring beneath the spray — we enter territory that demands specific oil treatment and honest, consistent maintenance. We do not discourage this; we simply say it plainly: in those positions the timber is working at its limit and needs looking after. To understand how timber converses with the stone surfaces of a bathroom, it is worth considering two warm textures we return to constantly: travertine and terracotta. Maintenance: The Honesty of Premium Materials

We will not sell you a fantasy. Thermally modified wood requires care, in the same way marble or unlacquered brass does. The good news is that the care is straightforward:

  • Oil every six to twelve months in zones that contact water. A cloth, tung oil or a wood-specific bath oil, ten minutes. Closer to a ritual than a chore.
  • Ventilation — as always. No organic material thrives in stagnant steam.
  • No bleach or aggressive degreasers. Neutral soap and water.

In return for that small and regular attention, you receive a surface that ages in your favour, not against you. Thermally modified wood acquires patina, settles, tells time the way a fine parquet floor does. What is industrial deteriorates; what is noble matures. Will thermally modified wood rot in a bathroom?

Properly specified and maintained, no. The treatment eliminates the sugars that mould feeds on, making decay far less likely than with conventional timber. In the dry zone it is a near non-issue; in direct contact with water, the outcome depends on oil and ventilation.

Is it more expensive than regular wood?

Yes, it carries a higher starting price due to the firing process. But it is the right investment: untreated timber placed in a wet room is money poorly spent over the medium term. Here you are paying for longevity — the same framing we apply to natural stone versus porcelain.

Does it lose its colour over time?

Like all wood, it evolves. Prolonged direct sunlight may lighten the surface slightly, but because thermowood’s colour is structural rather than applied, it never flakes or fades unevenly. Regular oil keeps the tone alive.

Can it be used on the shower floor?

It can, with a purpose-made slatted deck that allows drainage and drying, plus frequent oiling. It is a beautiful and demanding solution. If that level of attention is not for you, we will say so clearly and keep the wood for the dry zone.

Does it smell burnt, given the heat treatment?

No. Fresh from the kiln it carries a toasted, lightly smoky and genuinely pleasant aroma that dissipates within weeks. Nothing like a burning smell — closer to the air inside a Nordic sauna.
